However, these moments in the game are excellent for character building and help build on the amazing character development shown throughout the game. Following these brief moments of downtime, Black Cat gives Peter and Harry a lead to a nearby Hunter base and the two of them go to take them down. The next few missions of the game are quite uneventful from a larger standpoint, as Peter Parker loses his professor job and returns to photography. After a large-scale prologue that immediately grabs attention, the plot focuses on the confrontation with the antagonist Kraven the Hunter, who wants to eliminate all superheroes and supervillains. As the struggle with him unfolds, the narrative shifts its focus to Norman Osborn and his son Harry, who suffers from a mysterious illness. Lighting, shadows, and reflections have been revamped to give the game a visual polish. The number of people and vehicle traffic on the streets has increased due to a slight reduction in detail, which is unnoticeable in dynamics.

But out of this expansive rogues gallery, Venom is the magnum opus that reprises every emotional note the rest of the game has played. Spider-Man 2 foreshadows the looming threat he poses over dozens of its 31 main story missions. Thankfully, you’ll have massively-enhanced gadgetry and powers by the time you finally face him. Despite Spider-Man 2’s relatively forgiving system requirements, the game seems to seriously struggle on PC. I have experienced multiple crashes while playing the game, with the first coming right after the initial cutscenes and before any gameplay. In one particularly annoying instance, the game crashed and even though I closed out of it completely, the audio kept blaring from my computer speakers until I reset my PC.

This portion of the game later becomes the inspiration for one of the title’s most expansive collectibles, as players later on can find Marko’s Memories scattered throughout the city. The boss fight against the Sandman sets the tone for the game’s scale, as each boss fight feels like a larger-than-life struggle with high stakes for the main characters. Outside of the likes of Venom, Kraven, and Lizard seen in the trailers, Insomniac has kept many more cards hidden up its sleeve. I won’t even hint at any of these except to say that Spider-Man 2 opens with a bang, offering up a sense of scale not previously seen in the series. It’s an adrenaline-fuelled reintroduction to the series that tests how well you remember the combat, as well as providing a few new tricks.

In keeping with Insomniac’s track record, the music behind it all is stellar, with Miles’ and Peter’s respective signature tunes playing depending on who you’re controlling. A highlight, though, is the theme that follows in Kraven’s footsteps, which bears more than a passing resemblance to Howard Shore’s Uruk-hai war march from The Lord of the Rings score. It soundtracks a world that looks stunning, even when played in performance mode at a stable 60fps as I did for most of my playthrough.

But they aren’t just a flashy addition from the comics and movies – they entirely change how you navigate around Marvel’s New York. Evans I.
